cPanel alternatives in 2026: the honest comparison

Why the licence keeps getting more expensive, what CyberPanel, HestiaCP, CloudPanel and ISPConfig actually cost instead, and what moving off cPanel really involves.

Published 2026-08-01·Panomity GmbH

A cPanel alternative is an open-source server control panel — CyberPanel, HestiaCP, CloudPanel or ISPConfig — that manages websites, mail, databases and SSL on a VPS without cPanel's per-account licence fee. As of July 2026, cPanel's Partner/Reseller licence runs $21.00/month for up to five accounts (up from $19.75/month in 2025, a 6% rise), and a direct-purchase licence costs $35.99/month per account; all four open-source panels below are free at the core. The real difference isn't features — it's who sets next year's price: cPanel L.L.C., or nobody.

Why cPanel got expensive

cPanel used to be a flat, predictable line item. It has since moved to account-tiered pricing that goes up on a schedule the vendor controls, not the hosting company or the site owner paying for it. That matters more than any single number, because the number you'd read here today will be out of date by the time cPanel next revises it — which, going by recent years, will be within twelve months.

cPanel Admin, Partner/Reseller$21.00/monthUp to 5 accounts; $19.75/month in 2025, +6%
cPanel Admin, direct purchase$35.99/monthPer account

Even the cheapest cPanel path, unlimited accounts on a VPS/Cloud licence, is still a recurring per-server fee that scales with how many servers you run. None of the four alternatives below have that line at all. None of this is a complaint about cPanel's software — WHM/cPanel remains the dominant panel in shared and reseller hosting for good reason, and that installed base is exactly why moving to account-tiered pricing barely dents demand: switching costs (migration effort, a familiar UI, staff retraining) are real, not imagined. An alternative panel only works as an actual alternative if that switching cost is handled properly rather than waved away, which is why migration gets a full section below instead of a one-line promise.

The four alternatives, briefly

CyberPanel runs on OpenLiteSpeed with built-in page caching and a Docker manager built into its own UI; mail is an optional module you switch on rather than a forced default. Free at the core, though CyberPanel sells an optional paid Enterprise add-on for extra features — worth knowing before you assume every feature stays free forever.

HestiaCP is the lightest footprint of the four, runs Nginx and/or Apache, and bundles a complete mail stack (Exim, Dovecot, webmail) plus built-in DNS. Fully free, with no paid tier.

CloudPanel is Nginx-only and tuned for PHP, Node.js and Python site types side by side. It deliberately ships without a mail server; pair it with an external or transactional provider instead. Fully free.

ISPConfig supports Apache or Nginx, ships a full mail stack (Postfix, Dovecot) and built-in DNS, and is the only one of the four built to manage several servers from one login. Fully free. Migration reality

Moving off cPanel is not a config import — the panels don't share a format, so it's handled as a proper migration, not a setting you flip. Effort tracks the number of custom cron jobs, SSL certificates and mail domains involved far more than it tracks raw account count: a single plain WordPress account moves faster than a smaller account with hand-tuned mail routing.

01

Clone

Sites, databases and mailboxes are copied onto the new panel without touching the live cPanel server.

02

Stage

A temporary hostname so you can click through every page, form and cron job before anything customer-facing changes.

03

Cut DNS

Once you sign off, we lower the TTL, flip the records, and keep the old cPanel server warm for a rollback window.

Nothing changes for visitors until you approve the cutover, and the old cPanel server stays reachable as a rollback path — the migration risk sits with us, not with your uptime.

What actually adds time to a migration is rarely the account count — it's the details underneath it:

  • Custom mail routing: catch-alls, forwarders and per-domain SMTP rules need to be read out of cPanel's configuration and rebuilt on the new panel's mail stack, not just copied.
  • Cron jobs and scheduled scripts: anything referencing absolute cPanel paths (like /home/username/ layouts) needs its paths checked against the new panel's filesystem layout.
  • Wildcard and multi-domain SSL: certificates covering several add-on domains need to be reissued or re-validated against the new panel's certificate store, not just dropped in place.
  • Hardcoded IPs or hostnames in application config files (database hosts, API callbacks, cache endpoints) surface during staging, not before — which is exactly why staging happens before DNS moves, not after.

What this costs on controlpanel.hosting

The panel itself never appears as a separate line item here — you pick CyberPanel, HestiaCP, CloudPanel or ISPConfig at no extra charge, and pay only for the VPS underneath. Three sizes, net prices, excl. VAT:

PlanRAMPrice
Pilot4 GB€19.90/month
Captain8 GB€29.90/month
Commander16 GB€49.90/month

Net prices, excl. VAT; paying annually cuts the monthly rate by 20%. Current plans and checkout: /cart/panel-vps/.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked

Why did cPanel get so expensive?

cPanel moved years ago from a flat per-server licence to per-account, tiered pricing, and has raised prices most years since. As of July 2026, the Partner/Reseller licence for up to five accounts is $21.00/month, up 6% from $19.75/month in 2025; a direct-purchase licence runs $35.99/month per account, and cPanel VPS/Cloud licensing costs roughly $20 per server per month even at low account counts. The number keeps moving because cPanel L.L.C. sets the schedule, not you — that's the whole argument for an open-source panel with no per-account line item at all.

Is CyberPanel production-ready?

Yes, for the workloads it's built for. CyberPanel runs on OpenLiteSpeed with built-in page caching, ships a Docker manager in its own UI, and treats mail as an optional module rather than a forced default — a sensible design for WordPress- and app-heavy hosting where LiteSpeed's caching matters and Docker is welcome. It's free at the core; CyberPanel also sells an optional paid Enterprise add-on for extra features, which is worth knowing about before you assume everything stays free forever. As with any panel move, we stage on a temporary hostname and let you sign off before DNS changes, so readiness gets verified against your actual sites, not a generic claim.

Can I migrate cPanel accounts to an open panel?

Yes. We clone your sites, databases and mailboxes onto the new panel without touching the live server, test everything on a staging hostname, and only cut DNS over once you've signed off — the old server stays warm for a rollback window. Effort scales with the number of custom cron jobs, SSL certificates and mail domains involved, not simply with account count, so a plain WordPress-only cPanel account migrates faster than a smaller account running custom mail routing. Either way, nothing changes for your visitors until you approve the cutover.

What do open-source panels cost?

CyberPanel, HestiaCP, CloudPanel and ISPConfig are all free at the core — no per-account licence, ever. CyberPanel is the one exception worth flagging: it sells an optional paid Enterprise add-on for extra features, but the base panel remains free. On controlpanel.hosting the panel itself adds nothing to the bill; you pay for the VPS it runs on — Pilot (4 GB RAM) at €19.90/month, Captain (8 GB RAM) at €29.90/month, or Commander (16 GB RAM) at €49.90/month, net prices excl. VAT, with 20% off on annual billing.
